Enrichment / Extra Curricular

We see involvement in extra curricular and enrichment activities as both a right and a responsibility (for students). As such, we actively encourage our students to participate in the wide range of opportunities available to them.

At Gosforth Junior High, we offer a variety of extra curricular clubs that run before and after school. These clubs are free for everyone to attend and are organised and ran by our staffing team. They include homework and study clubs, game clubs, sports clubs, and creative arts, with activities changing each term. Our schedule of pre and post school extra curricular clubs can be viewed below.

Our Performing Arts department showcases two performances at Christmas and a summer show, all of which encourage students of all abilities and interests to take part.

Enrichment Programme

This academic year, we are excited to introduce an Enrichment Programme at Gosforth Junior High Academy for our students. The programme will be available for all subjects and year groups during the school day, providing children with lessons and activities that extend beyond the national curriculum.

The primary goal of the programme is to identify students who have a specific passion for a subject and to offer them opportunities that go beyond the standard curriculum delivered in school. Teachers in each subject area will identify these students, who will then have the chance to participate in a variety of enriching experiences throughout the academic year, alongside their peers from the same year group.

Every week in school a different subject area will deliver a session to the selected children in school. More details of what these offer can be found below.

ENRICHMENT MATHS

Mathematics

We have a varied and broad curriculum in Mathematics. We use the Enrichment sessions to offer opportunities to provide a variation of mathematics that is beyond our school curriculum. This involves problem solving activities, working with professionals who require the use of mathematics for their day-to-day jobs and generally enhancing the children’s love for the subject.
Enrichment English

English

In English we pride ourselves on nurturing a love of reading to the children in school. Our curriculum builds on writing and grammar skills in KS2 before moving onto in depth analysis of texts and genres in KS3. During the enrichment sessions, children with a love for subject will be able to experience opportunities beyond our curriculum.
Enrichment Science

Science

In science we focus on a comprehensive understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We aim to prepare students for future scientific endeavors by integrating practical experiments and theoretical knowledge. If the students are selected for the Enrichment programme they will be giving the opportunity to use these skills in activities beyond what the national curriculum offers.
Enrichment Humanities

Humanities

The Humanities curriculum at Gosforth Junior High Academy covers a broad range of subjects, including history, geography, and religious education, aiming to develop students' understanding of the world and its diverse cultures. The department focuses on critical thinking, analytical skills, and fostering a sense of curiosity and respect for different perspectives. During Enrichment sessions we aim to provide children the opportunities to apply these skills to field work activities.
ENRICHMENT PE

PE

The PE curriculum at Gosforth Junior High Academy aims to inspire all pupils to excel in both competitive and non-competitive sports, promoting physical confidence and a healthy lifestyle. Students engage in a variety of activities, including athletics, gymnastics, and team sports, to develop flexibility, strength, and teamwork skills. The enrichment programme allows pupils with a passion for the subject to experience sports like Golf and Boxing, that we currently don’t have on our curriculum.
Enrichment DT

Art / Design & Technology

I Art and DT we encourage creativity and practical skills through a variety of projects, including ceramics, woodwork, and food technology. The department is well-equipped with specialised facilities, such as a bespoke D&T workshop and a magnificent art room, to support students' artistic and technical development. In our Enrichment sessions students will be able to apply skills to activities we currently don’t offer in their year group such as printing and textiles.
ENRICHMENT music

Performing Arts

The performing arts curriculum at Gosforth Junior High Academy offers students rich and varied opportunities in drama and music, emphasising both practical engagement and knowledge-based lessons. It aims to foster personal development, creativity, and critical thinking, while also promoting cultural awareness and teamwork. Students are encouraged to explore different styles and techniques, enhancing their skills and confidence through a broad and well-rounded education.
ENRICHMENT MFL

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

In MFL we focus on building a strong foundation in Spanish during Key Stage 2, which is then expanded to include French in Key Stage 3. We have recently introduced Mandarin into our KS3 curriculum. The department prioritises practical language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also fostering cultural awareness through engaging topics and cross-curricular links. In our Enrichment sessions we challenge students with a flair for languages by allowing them to use these skills in real life situations and applying them to other languages.
ENRICHMENT ICT

ICT

The ICT curriculum at Gosforth Junior High Academy integrates essential digital literacy skills with practical applications, preparing students for the technological demands of the modern world. The department emphasizes creativity, problem-solving, and safe online practices through engaging and interactive lessons. During our enrichment sessions we expose the children to ways they can apply their skills to modern programming techniques and show them how the skills they learn in school are transferable to real life.
