Year 5 Maths Enrichment

Westfield School Girls in STEM Extravaganza Day

This was an event to encourage girls to consider pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects.
Research suggests that by age 10 or 11 a significant proportion of girls have decided that a ‘STEM’ career isn’t for them, so we plan to tackle this by running an exciting, educational event, which will help to inform and inspire girls about STEM careers and give them the opportunity to do some fun hands-on Science and Engineering!
Our Year 5 students participated in:
● Hands-on practical activities, including ‘Creative Chemistry’.
● The chance to try out ‘Northern Powergrid’s protective clothing and learn about electricity.
● ‘Changing the World with Engineering’ session run by Newcastle University graduate ambassadors
● Talks and videos about STEM careers, including a talk from a female representative from a high-profile business. This year, they welcomed Emma Marshall, a Senior Mechanical Engineer at RPS, a global consultancy firm.
